Nicole Kimmey and I met in the Spring semester of Sophomore year in the Fashion Show class, where we worked on Social Media and Publication. She quickly became someone that stood out to me because of her killer coats which changed almost every class. From long dusters to short fur jackets, she was ‘It Girl’ when it came to layering. This fall semester, Nicole started a blog and I knew I had to feature her for the Fashion Report! Below are some facts about the blogger behind Just Wear Whatever, and don’t forget to click on over to her blog when you’re done!
- When did you start your blog and why?
“My first post was on September 1st. I’ve wanted to start a blog since 9th grade because I’ve always been interested in clothing, fashion and everything about it, but I never had the confidence to start until college. What really helped was joining the fashion program and being a part of the CSU Fashion Show and meeting new people. I feel like the people in my class encouraged me to wear things I usually wouldn’t wear. Learning about the business structure, as well as growing older and maturing helped too. I have more confidence within myself and I believe I can credit that to people within the fashion major who really influenced me to finally start it.”
- Tell us a little about yourself
“I’m from a suburb outside of Dallas in Texas. I’m a junior at Colorado State double majoring in Business Marketing and Design and Merchandising. I moved to Colorado for college to do more outdoorsy activities like hiking, skiing and camping. Even though I enjoy all of those things, I’m a city girl at heart; I love walking the streets and just being there. I like to travel and do yoga and cook vegan food.”
- I noticed your blog is filled with fashion and style posts, but is there anything else you want us to know about your blog?
“Right now, the focus is on fashion. I do want to transform it into something else, but I just started out and I’m not sure where it will go. I like inspiration posts, interior design and food, but those are far down the road because I don’t want to take on too much all at once. My goal is to inspire people and show that you can buy some expensive items and some cheaper items, and put them together for a high and low everyday look that a college student can afford.”
- Why did you choose the name ‘Just Wear Whatever’?
“I was trying really hard to find a name and I noticed a lot of bloggers use their real name, but I don’t like my name. I came up with J.W.W because I have the attitude of wearing whatever I want. When I finally gained the confidence to wear whatever I wanted in college, I was like ‘who cares what people think?’ If you like and it makes you feel good then wear it for you. I think it fits with my sarcastic attitude, like ‘ugh just do it’, ‘it’s whatever’. I thought the acronym J.W.W would be catchy too.”
- I would describe your style as classic with a twist but how would you describe your style?
“I want to look like a modern woman. I like the high and low mixture and I like to wear a lot of monochromatic outfits in black and grey. I’m not a very colorful person and I don’t wear a lot of print. My go to statement pieces are my coats, boots and belts. A lot of people will comment on my coats and say, ‘I know you, you’re the girl who wears coats all the time’. I get my coats from everywhere like Urban Outfitters, Nordstrom, Rat and Boa, Express and Zara. A big reason for why I wear boots and coats all the time is that in Texas I couldn’t wear them, but when I moved to Colorado, I could! I love wearing pants so I think Fall and Winter have to be my favorite seasons.”
- Do you have a style icon, if so who?
“I would say my mom, but I also look up to a lot of social media style icons and online influences. My top three would be Danielle from We Wore What, Brittany Xavier from Thrifts and Threads and Linh Niller who is also a blogger. They helped me to step out of the box and they gave me inspiration to find things that are more affordable which is my takeaway from them. They may purchase a top that is $200 but I will look for a similar top that is $30 and that makes me happy.”
- What has been one success and one challenge you have experienced with J.W.W?
“My success would have to be the recognition from friends and family, which was surprising. I wasn’t really expecting people to reach out to me and share how they feel. I’ve also been reached out to by companies and its only been a month! Another success is proving to myself that I can do it because I wasn’t sure if I could, but I did.
The first challenge is building the website, learning about SEOs, how to make the site run well and how to make pictures look great. A lot of research goes into starting a blog and trying to post weekly can be challenging as well as keeping up with social media.”
- Who is your photographer?
“My boyfriend, Robert Wilkinson, is my photographer because I forced him to do it. (Jk, I asked for consent.) He pushed me to do it and he encourages me by being a big support. I enjoy his company. It can be hard to model but it helps that he is someone I’m comfortable with. I edit my pictures with apps on my phone and sometimes with I’ll use Photoshop. I keep in mind to edit only the background, lighting or mood but never my body. I think that body confidence is a huge issue that our generation faces, which is why I don’t manipulate my body. Body confidence is a big thing for me and I haven’t reached it yet, but I’m working on it. You just need to learn your angles because everyone has good ones and bad ones.”
- What should our viewers look forward to seeing on “Just Wear Whatever”?
“Look out for future winter posts coming soon. I am also happy to announce that I will be studying abroad in Italy during the Spring semester, so expect to see some great scenery and traveling through Europe! I’ll be sharing more about my experience while traveling so my posts will be more lifestyle mixed with fashion.”
- What else do you want us to know?
“Remember to just wear what makes you comfortable. Don’t let people decide what you should wear or put on your body. I wish I had started my blog sooner for my future career. Don’t second guess yourself. Whatever you want to do, be bold enough to do it.”
