If there’s one thing our staff here at The Fashion Report likes more than putting together amazing looks, it’s putting those looks together for an affordable price! In the spirit of friendly competition, we decided to combine those two loves into a contest: The Thrift Store Challenge.
The rules were simple- we would all visit Arc Thrift in order to see which team could create the best outfit with a budget limit of $15 and a time limit of twenty minutes. Each team would then select a member to model the outfit, posing them with nearby props to set the best scene. The models were allowed to incorporate what they were already wearing into their outfits without that counting against the team’s total. The final images would then be posted to our social media platforms, and the team with the most “likes” would be crowned the winner!
Team Polka Dot Penguins
“The thrift store challenge lived up to its name and indeed was more challenging than we had originally expected. Our team had to create an outfit given the allotted time of twenty minutes and a $15 dollar budget. Once we got into the store the first thing we did was look at the tags of each category of clothing to gain a feel of the price point. We then agreed our staple piece should be a sweater or a coat and we built on from there. We also agreed that adding an accessory would make it more fashion forward. With thirty seconds left in the competition, and over-budget our team had to make some quick decisions, we needed to cut down on some items. We decided to only keep the jacket and scarf and to make it work with some of the items one of our team members was already wearing.
Although we might not have been able to put together a full outfit with a fifteen dollar budget, you can definitely put together a nice outfit and have a good time along the way. In the end our group was happy with the end result, which was a chic business casual office look.”
Team Perfect Patches
“The highly anticipated thrift store challenge brought out our groups, Perfect Patches, ferocious competitive spirit. Despite our relatively adorable, unassuming name, we wanted to give our competitors a run for their money, which ending up working ideally as the complete look only costed $15. Though our expectations were high and our plan carefully laid out…once we actually arrived the plan unravelled.
If we hadn’t remained calm, Perfect Patches might have unravelled as well. Okay, so that isn’t exactly true- I might have had a perpetual look of panic, but thanks to the other members it turned out fine. The original plan was to revive an ugly sweater to a more fashionable state, and we actually ended up finding a sweater range of ugly to uglier to why would someone wear this. Unfortunately, none of them matched the dream. In an effort to flip our rapid descent, we made a masterful 360 flip and looked for inspiration in the pile of clothes we accumulated.
The accent scarf became the outfit’s main inspiration. Recently, I had visited the Sherlock Holmes exhibit in the Natural History Museum. The dark blue striped scarf inspired a cool, matured look that matches Mr. Holmes style repertoire. Though the modern button-up denim and cozy, oversized sweater combination brings a distinct modern touch to the simple combination. The placement of the scarf credits a thanks to Mr. Holmes and gives a unique fashion forward take on a simply “perfect” outfit.”
Team Mulled Wine
Our inspiration came from our model’s makeup and choice of footwear she brought with her. Knowing we were working with a Bordeaux wine color, we set out to find something that would match or compliment that color choice. We settled on a faux velvet evening dress with a medium height leg slit and open shoulder which had an almost identical rich red color. To break up the color wall, we chose a vintage leather A2 jacket with a standing collar in a smooth but rusticated black which went perfectly as a not to casual option for an evening look.
In the end the team with the most likes on our social media outlets was Team Perfect Patches! Congratulations to the team members Cass, Haley, and Kaitlin! The winner of this contest also has the honour of creating the first challenge of the new semester! Be sure to check back here to see what they come up with.
