Here at The Fashion Report, the Beauty Team has certainly taken an interest in well, beauty! We cover topics like hair, exercise, health and makeup with tips and tricks on how to help you look and feel your very best.
When meeting to discuss our topics and ideas, a common experience often mentioned is how we are met with negative feedback when people learn about our interests or what we write about; especially when it pertains to makeup. If you have ever taken an interest in any type of makeup or cosmetic product, you have probably had to deal with listening to a few of the following comments as well:
“Guys do not like when you wear makeup.”
“So you like looking fake?”
“You should be confident in your own skin.”
“Why do you even wear that stuff?”
The list goes on and on as do the misconceptions that many people have about makeup, by both men and women alike, who enjoy, wear or even write about makeup. So, the Beauty Team put together a collaborative piece in response to perceived negative comments to help clarify why we support those who like makeup (wear it or not) and to support everyone in their own personal choice.
What do Guys think of Makeup?
Girls can wear makeup for whatever reason they so choose, whether it be for themselves or for the appearance that other’s see. No matter the case, many would say that men’s opinion on how women present themselves is relevant.
When I asked some men what their opinions on makeup were, I happened to receive similar ideas. Many believed that makeup is a way for women to feel good about themselves. They believe that makeup is a way of boosting confidence and allowing them to feel comfortable among the public. Many of the men stated that they have no problem with women wearing makeup if that is something they feel they need to do. Their only concern was that if they choose to wear makeup, they feel they should know how to apply it correctly. Across the board, men were not fond of a cakey and overly exaggerated face. In fact, most men claimed they did not really notice the effort girls put into their makeup unless it was overly done and exaggerated; and then they notice it in a negative way.
Ladies, whether you wear makeup for yourself, for the love of makeup or out of the consideration of your appearance to others, men do notice makeup. They find it important that you not only feel comfortable in your own skin while having makeup on, but also the confidence of yourself without makeup. A few also mentioned they preferred the “no makeup, makeup look.”
However you choose to wear your makeup or whomever you choose to wear it for, what is most important is how it makes you feel. If you are comfortable and confident, that is what truly matters.

There are many different views and opinions regarding the use of makeup and when and how it should be used. For example, in my middle school years I started to see the emergence of young girls from my school wearing eye shadow and mascara. I was always curious about makeup to begin with and thought I was ready to try out a few products. My mom only let me wear a minimal amount; while my dad thought the idea of wearing any type of makeup at my age should not be something I was concerned with.
As I continued into my high school years, I experimented more and found all the right products that worked for me. I started to become very familiar with different brands and how to create a look that suited me.
Although girls have their own opinions and expertise on makeup products, guys are obviously not as connected to understand the real purpose. One of my best guy friends who I have known for a long time, has his own opinions, so I thought I would get some brief input from him.
When I asked the first question of do you like when girls wear any form of makeup he said yes. He then went on to elaborate that how much makeup a girl wears should be appropriate to the occasion. For example, he stated if a girl were to go out on the weekends and dress up, a fair amount of makeup would be appropriate. However, when he walks around campus on a basic school day, he states it can look a little unappealing when a girl appears to be trying too hard in such a casual environment. He did not grow up with any sisters and has only brothers so he includes the fact that his exposure to being around girls that are close to him at all times is not so prominent. When it comes to our personal relationship, he understands my procedure for getting ready and knows my personal style with makeup. However, I still joke around with him often because he cannot identify different products.
Makeup is something that all people feel differently about and have different preferences on. Whatever your style or preferences, this is what makes personal style so innovative and ever changing in the world of beauty.
Why I Wear Makeup
Every so often I come across an article or blog post titled something like “10 Makeup Trends Men Hate.” I have read quite a few of these and noticed that the comments section is always full of women saying that the opinions of men do not factor into their beauty routines. I am in the same boat.
There are many reasons why someone would or would not wear makeup. I wear makeup because I want to impress other girls and because I know that most guys do not know enough about makeup to have an educated opinion on it.
I have been wearing makeup on a daily basis since I was about 13 or 14. I have always loved the art of makeup and want to someday work professionally in the beauty industry. Currently, as a college student studying fashion, I am surrounded by women. Because I take note of what my peers are wearing and how they do their makeup, I know that they look at me the same way. I can appreciate a girl who has even wings on her eyeliner or is rocking a perfect red lip, since I know the effort that goes into making these looks happen. In this way, I wear makeup to get that same reaction from other girls.
When asked about their preferences regarding makeup, most guys will say that they do not like it or prefer the “natural look.” A little while back, there was a saying floating around the internet that stated “When girls wear makeup, they are basically lying to us.” As no one has naturally shimmery eyelids or glossy lips, I think you can tell when a girl is wearing makeup. I have found though that most men have strong opinions about makeup without really knowing anything about it.
Most importantly though, I wear makeup because I enjoy it. It gives me a creative outlet and gives me confidence.
Why I don’t Wear Makeup
There are many different opinions on makeup. Whether that be how to wear it, what kind you should wear or how much you should wear, everyone has an opinion. The important thing to remember is that not one opinion matters more than your own.
I rarely ever wear makeup. This may seem like a bit of a contradiction, due to the fact that I am a beauty writer for a fashion magazine; but, despite this presumed opposition, it works for me. I am a very laidback person and would describe my fashion as “lazy chic.” I would much rather spend an extra thirty minutes in bed than getting dolled up before class. With that being said I do like makeup. I just simply do not wear it very often. I like how it can highlight your features and boost your confidence, regardless of what you look like or what gender you identify with. This is why I enjoy helping others with their makeup and why I will occasionally wear it myself. I do not see anything wrong with makeup. Whether you chose go au naturale or completely cake face. It is all up to you. So when it come to the topic of makeup remember the age old words of wisdom: “You do you, boo.”
We hope that you can resonate with or have a better understanding on why some people take an interest in cosmetics. The Beauty Team is always looking to write what you want to read about so let us know if there is something we should write next.
