The collaboration between David Beckham and H&M, which began back in 2012, has been an absolute hit. The “Bodywear by David Beckham” collection features lots of sports clothing, think sweats and shorts, and a few accessories, like beanies. Though the main focus, and probably the reason the collection has been doing so well, is that Beckham models all of the clothing, including the boxers and briefs. Besides being a model – and retired football icon – Beckham is also a style icon.
But he is that rare style icon that not only participates in designing clothes, but also exudes effortless charm while modeling said clothing. He also knows how to look good no matter the occasion; whether rocking a suit on the red carpet or dressed down in jeans and a t-shirt.
That is why it makes sense that this season Beckham will not only be designing for his H&M collection, but also hand-selecting his favorite pieces from H&M’s menswear line. This edit, called “Modern Essentials by David Beckham,” is a fantastic mix of high and low fashion basics that absolutely belong in every guy’s closet!
Even though these items are not particularly groundbreaking in form, think poplin white shirts, classic polo shirts and denim jackets, many men still struggle to get these looks just right. But do not worry, we are here to help you sort through a few of our favorites and show you exactly how to wear them:
Poplin White Shirt
Perhaps one of the most versatile items in a man’s wardrobe, the humble white shirt deserves its place of honor at the forefront of male fashion. It can be dressed up or down to fit just about any situation. The drawback to an item this popular is that there are almost too many versions to choose from! But why not follow Beckham’s lead and opt for a poplin version this season?
This slim-fitting version features a poplin weave for a textured appearance, while the light cotton material works equally well on its own when it is hot out, or layered under other garments when it is cold. This spring, wear your white poplin shirt with a pair of blue tailored linen shorts, driving shoes and tortoise-shell wayfarers and embrace the heat!
Piqué Polo Shirt
When the weather is nice, polo shirts become ubiquitous around campus. Yet with so many versions on the market, why is it so difficult to find a shirt that fits well without breaking the bank? H&M has provided the solution with their piqué polo shirt. The contrasting details add some visual interest and the fit is top quality: no more shirt tails that extend beyond your waist for practically no reason and no more sleeves that engulf your elbows!
Even for those of you familiar with wearing this type of shirt, do not be afraid to put a new spin on the classic look by wearing it with light wash jeans, white shoes and a simple leather bracelet. Finally, add your favorite pair of sunglasses and you will be ready for the sunny weather ahead.
White Denim Jacket
The denim jacket has been an American staple for years. Although the blue denim version will always be a classic item, there is no reason not to try branching out with this white chalk-washed version from H&M.
It is just as cool as its blue cousin, but the white color will set you apart from everyone else. It is also incredibly appropriate for the warmer months ahead. Because it is a classic item in a neutral color, you will have no problem styling this jacket with just about anything else in your closet. But in case you need a bit of inspiration, try pairing it with a grey Henley tee, dark wash jeans and brown desert boots.
As you can see, the results speak for themselves. When H&M collaborates with soccer star David Beckham you know the outcome will be both stylish and easy to incorporate into your everyday style. His newest venture with the company is sure to be another hit, and while we only highlighted a few pieces from the collection, make sure to check out all of Beckham’s “Modern Essential” selections.
