Activated charcoal as a skincare ingredient is trending in a major way. As bizarre as this ingredient sounds, the use of charcoal in skincare has been around for a long time. So what are the benefits of this ingredient? And more importantly, how is it being used in beauty products?
Normal charcoal is made from peat, wood, coal, coconut shells and even petroleum. Unlike the charcoal used on grills, activated charcoal is created by carbon that has been infused with oxygen, and therefore is safe for human digestion and topical use. This process creates a porous surface that is ideal for absorbing toxins and other matter. This, along with antibacterial properties, makes this ingredient good for oily and acne prone skin.
When added to beauty products it can draw out impurities in the skin, heal pimples and even prevent further breakouts. Activated charcoal can also be used as an anti-aging product because it tightens pores and smooth’s skin. Even if you are not using activated charcoal in beauty products, it still has endless uses; ranging from treating poisonings, lowering cholesterol, treating hangovers and decreasing bile flow problems in pregnant women.
So how can you get on the activated charcoal train? Well, several companies have already started adding it to their products, with most coming in the form of cleansers or face masks. Activated charcoal is also very popular in DIY skincare recipes, including easy recipes for homemade mascaras and face masks. So why not check out a few for yourselves?
If you are looking to add activated charcoal into some of your own concoctions, then all you need are charcoal capsules, which can be taken by themselves or crushed and added to many other ingredients. You can find them at most health food stores in the pharmacy or cosmetic sections.
Activated charcoal has several beneficial properties for the skin, which may explain why it is so trendy right now. Hopefully, it will be popping up in more skincare products in the near future but for now there are many good products already on the market. Check out some of our favorites below.
