Iconic, dramatic and beautiful: Red lips are visually striking and scream style. The look is simple, elegant and timeless.
However, the look can be intimidating to wear due to its bold color. But if you want to rock the red lip look, or just want to brush up on your skills, then I have got a couple tricks that will guarantee you uber chic results!
The first tip I can give when it comes to rocking a red lip is selecting the proper shade of red. If you find the right shade of red for your complexion it is hard to go wrong. A universally flattering shade is a true red with just a tiny bit of blue in it. To put it another way, look for a red that is more cool than warm. Bonus: blue undertones make teeth look whiter!
However, every skin tone has a shade of red that compliments and flatters its unique coloration. Instead of going through and listing each, instead I prepared a handy-dandy chart to make sense of all those shades of red. Simply find your skin tone on the top and your undertones on the left to find your perfect match!
|Warm||Coral-Red||Orange or Brown based Reds||Anything goes!|
|Cool||Raspberry||Pink or Brown based Reds||Dark, Cool Reds|
|Neutral||True Reds||Brick Reds||Anything goes!|
The next important step in nailing that red lip is liner. Red lipstick has a tendency to bleed so you will need to outline your lips in order to keep the edges crisp. If you want to really saturate the color and make a dramatic statement, then try completely filling in your lips with liner before applying a layer of lipstick.
When choosing a color of lip liner you have many options. If you find a liner that is the perfect match for your chosen shade, then you are good to go! While if you find one that is similar but not quite right, simply outline the lips with the liner then with a small lip brush or the corner of a sponge blend the color in toward the center of your lips. Just make sure to leave the outside lines tight and crisp. This will create a nice ombre effect that will allow for a seamless transition once you apply your lipstick.
Likewise, if you like to keep things simple then clear liners are a great choice and can work with any shade of lipstick. Just make sure to thoroughly outline your lips and work carefully, for you will not be able to see your progress with the clear liner like you would with a colored one.
Another important factor to consider if you want to rock a glam red lip all night is making sure the color lasts. There are a couple things you can do to give your lips a little insurance.
First: blot. After your liner is perfect and you have applied the lipstick, blot your lips with a tissue and then reapply the color. Applying sheer layers instead of one opaque layer helps to work the formula into the skin which in turn prevents fading. Once you have created two layers (or even three!) you need to set the lips.
A translucent setting powder is a good way to do this. Grab a tissue and pull the two layers into separate translucent layers. Then hold one of the tissue layers over the lips and sweep a layer of translucent powder on top. By using the tissue as a barrier, the powder will look natural and not dry or cakey. If you are going for a bold, matte lip then stop here!
But if you want a little shimmer or depth there are a couple tricks to make that red color really pop. One way is to use a red a few shades lighter than your chosen lip color. Apply a small dab right to the center of your bottom lip and the arch of your Cupid’s bow. Then blend the lighter color along the center third of the lips. You should have solid red on both of the outer thirds of your lips and a little lighter accent in the center. This trick really helps your lips look fuller.
If you want to add some shine, then I would recommend applying a clear gloss to the center third once again. Keeping gloss in the middle of the lips helps to create depth and shimmer without the dreaded sticky feeling.
For a little extra oomph take your concealer and apply it just outside your lips and blend outward to the rest of the face. This will create a professional looking application because it sharpens the lines and covers up any small errors. Hello Taylor Swift lips!
Finally, there is one more trick to looking fierce and confident with your red lips. After you are done applying color, place one index finger into your mouth, purse your lips around it, and slowly pull it out. This will remove any excess color that may be lingering just inside the lips. By doing this, you will prevent the “lipstick on the teeth” faux-pas we have all experienced.
Now that you have a perfect lip it is time to go out and show it off! Rock the style with confidence and you cannot go wrong. Rep lips are feminine, bold, and guaranteed to turn some heads!
