One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor. Take one too many shots or just cursed with the hangover blues? Just because you treated yourself to some fun last night does not mean you should have to be punished with a headache, nausea or overall crap feeling the next day. While there is no one solution to cure all the dreaded hangover symptoms, we have put together some options that may help to minimize that miserable feeling.
After a few drinks, you tend to famously break the seal with multiple bathroom breaks. It just so happens that with every bathroom break you are losing your necessary fluids, which leads to severe dehydration. Consider being proactive and rotating between alcoholic beverages and a glass of water to replenish those lost fluids.
If being proactive is not really your forte, then be sure to replenish your body with plenty of fluids the next day. Alcohol also causes your body to lose precious electrolytes, and while that may make you want to chug a whole bottle of Gatorade, water from the tap is just as effective in the replenishing those lost electrolytes, while at a much (i.e. free) price.
Often what you choose to eat the next day is anything you are able to hold down. Again it is smart to be proactive and think about what you are consuming in the time before you start to drink. Many speak about the wonders of lots of greasy foods. This is in fact true. Eating a lot of heavy food prior to drinking helps fight off the effect of drinking because the more food within your system the slower the alcohol will absorb into your blood stream.
As for the morning after, a favorite remedy are fruit smoothies. The natural sugars from the fruit will take away the trembles you may be experiencing, along with speeding up the alcohol absorption process in general. If you feel like cannot keep anything down, then I would highly recommend snacking on crackers. Just like they helped you as a sick child, they will help you as an “ill” adult as well.
Sleep it off
If you are lucky, you planned accordingly and can just sleep off the hangover. If you do have this option— take it. Waking up early, drinking a full glass of water and some pain medication to ease that pounding headache is an excellent choice. If brushing your teeth was not your first priority the night before, then definitely brush them the morning after, for who wants that awful aftertaste your mouth all day? Then fall back asleep and wake up later in the day when the worst of your hangover has eventually passed.
Hair of a Dog (More Alcohol): THIS IS A BAD IDEA— even if it works for a short time. If you do not have any plans or anywhere to be, then yes, consuming more alcohol will cause the awful feeling to go away. But, you are just putting off the inevitable. In fact, drinking more will only dehydrate your body further and result in an even worse hangover later on.
By all means, whatever makes you feel better—do it. But hopefully these suggestions help you bounce back quicker. So next time you wake up murmuring, “I will never drink again,” consider these tips!
