We all know that over time an apple slice will go brown, but did you know our own skin can go through a similar process? Scientists call this process oxidation, and it essentially means a loss of an electrons through the breakdown of a cell; in this case the breakdown of our skin cells.
As oxidation takes place, it has a similar effect on our skin. All cells in nature go through the oxidation process when exposed to their environment. But fortunately for us, we have the ability to counteract this process through antioxidants. These little power molecules give electrons back to elements and keep our cells healthy. Antioxidants are amazing for our bodies and should be a regular part of everyone’s diet.
An important thing to know is that antioxidants protect you from a multitude of harmful effects caused by free radicals, which can reek havoc on our bodies causing everything from premature aging to cancer. Think of them as internal superheroes saving you from everyday dangers you were not even aware of.
Although you may have seen numerous beauty products advertising their abundance of antioxidants, in fact the best way to gain antioxidants is simply to eat them. They can be found in wide variety of fruits and vegetables and are an easy way to ensure that you stick to your health goals.
Antioxidants can come in many different forms and include vitamins A, C, and E and are extremely helpful in maintaining your health. Some foods that are filled with antioxidants are grapes, berries, dark leafy greens, mixed nuts, dark chocolate and orange colored foods (think sweet potatoes and carrots). They can even be found in red wine, which positively rich in antioxidants. So when it comes to antioxidants, remember to eat well and drink responsibly.
While over time our bodies will age, that is part of life, there are certain things you can do to age gracefully (and I am not talking about Botox). Eating healthy, especially foods high in antioxidants, will keep your skin looking fresh and healthy. So yes eat another square of dark chocolate, your 50 year old self will thank you for it!
